Periodontal Treatment
Scaling and root planning is more commonly known as deep cleaning.
You have received this treatment because bacteria
have formed onto the surfaces of your teeth and are causing the
bone around your teeth to shrink away or down the root surface.
This infection known as Periodontal Disease can lead to the loss
of your teeth if left untreated. Today’s
procedure and all the other procedures in conjunction with this
one are designed to dislodge the bacteria and get them out of
your mouth. These procedures will also help keep them from
reforming on the root surface.
Your gums may be tender for 1 to 3 days following treatment.
Your teeth may be sensitive to hot and cold. Over the counter
sensitivity toothpastes are what work well for most patients.
Be
aware of your cheek and lip until all anesthetic has worn off.
Avoid
hard crunchy foods and foods with seeds and husks like popcorn,
nuts and chips.
It is critical you maintain good home care. The
plaque will begin to reform immediately, so brush and floss thoroughly
every day. This may be slightly tender the first few days.
Following
treatment- warm salt water rinses may be beneficial.
As with all
medical and dental procedures no guarantees have been expressed
or implied.
